LNG

LNG

LNG is capable of bringing previously inaccessible gas reserves to market. Although the global fleet has a good safety record, public concern about the flammability of the cargo and the high demands made on the technology by the cargo is high.

Noble Offshore surveyors and inspectors are fully trained and highly experienced in handling the growing LNG fleet. We have over 60 staff with LNG experience. Our engineers primarily specialise in process, marine and safety engineering but we are able to cover all other major engineering/scientific disciplines.Noble Offshore is a strong LNG partner because:

  • Our experience in all types and aspects of LNG production allows us to develop client specific solutions from safety and risk to effective asset operation
  • We are wholly independent and have no links to engineering contractors or process licensors
  • Our integrated technical and commercial design methodology aims to quantify and mitigate risks from the earliest project stages

We are active in many LNG organisations including the Society of International Tanker & Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) and the Technical Study Group of LNG Importers Group (GIIGNL)

Liquefaction

Liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is natural gas that has been supercooled to minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 162 degrees Celcius). At that temperature, the natural gas condenses into a liquid, making it feasible to transport via pipeline or LNG tanker.

Noble Offshore’s role in more than 20 world-scale projects has included:

  • Process engineer
  • Hazard/safety risk expert
  • Technical expert
  • Business risk modelling

Our consultancy services in LNG liquefaction include:

Technical Design Consultancy

  • Concept studies/plant design
  • Liquefaction technology selection
  • Gas processing design/consultancy
  • Techno-economic studies
  • Hydraulic surge analysis
  • Materials/corrosion consultancy
  • Gas quality consultancy
  • Custody transfer & metering consultancy
  • Mooring/berth analysis

Safety

  • Hazard assessments
  • Qualitative & Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA)
  • Operational safety cases
  • Safety audits
  • HAZOP HAZid, SIL, Bow tie and other analyses

Owner’s Support

  • Coaching and support to owners and regulators up to FID
  • Embedded engineers
  • Technical assurance & design review
  • Due diligence
  • Technology watch reporting
  • Technology & equipment development
  • Operations support

Importation / Regasification

Heating up the liquid gas once it is discharged at a shore-based terminal for regasification is one of the most hazardous stages of the process. We have experience of nearly 35 LNG import schemes using conventional and near shore technologies and are sensitive to environmental, safety, approvals challenges associated with regasification developments.

From tanker manoeuvrability in port to spill mitigation, our roles in these projects have included:

  • Process engineer
  • Hazard/safety risk expert
  • Technical expert
  • Business risk modelling
  • Operational support

Floating LNG

Floating LNG plants is one of the most exciting developments in the industry. We developed safety design guidelines for LNG FPSO through a Joint Industry project as early as 2000 and have been involved in another 10 projects. Safety and environmental criteria and concerns can frequently be met by combining our knowledge and expertise from our offshore engineering experience from the offshore industry and onshore LNG terminals.

Our roles in these projects have been:

  • Process engineer
  • Hazard/Safety risk expert
  • Business risk modelling
  • Marine expert

Small, Peak Shaving & Satellite Facilities

We have had a long association with smaller LNG plants including peak shavers, road tanker fed satellite facilities and vehicle refuelling stations.

Our roles in these projects have included:

  • Process engineer
  • Mechanical, corrosion and integrity engineers
  • Hazard/Safety engineer
  • Troubleshooting

LNG Carriers

Our parent company is a Classification Society and has classed LNG vessels. We offer a range of specialist consultancy services around LNG vessels and naval architecture. Our services include:

  • Mooring system design
  • Naval architecture
  • Hazard/safety risk analysis
